Philippines to host Miss Universe 2017

Beauty Pageant fans were treated with good news today as DOT Secretary Wanda Corazon Teo announced that the Philippines will host the 2017 Miss Universe pageant. It is recalled that last July 18, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach met with President Rodrigo Duterte to discuss the possibility of the Philippines hosting Miss Universe next year. Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach is the third Miss Universe titleholder of the Philippines, by the way.

The Miss Universe 2017 pageant is set to be held on January 2017 and funding for the event will come from the private sector with Henry Sy (of SM) and Japanese casino mogul Kazuo Okada being named as two of the primary sponsors for the event.

Earlier today, President Duterte shot down any speculations of the Philippines hosting the Miss Universe pageant saying that he’d rather not spend money on that. Turns out that our chances of hosting Miss Universe (which he had not done since 1994; the first time we hosted was in 1974) was undaunted by the President as DOT Secretary Teo got in touch with Shawn McClain, the Vice President for Miss Universe and Mr. McClain was shocked to learn that the Philippines is on board with the idea despite the President not having the same sentiments.

Not to mention that Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea is on board with the idea as well, giving DOT Secretary Teo the thumbs up to hold a press conference announcing that the Philippines is definitely on board with hosting the Miss Universe 2017 pageant.

In conclusion, Filipino Beauty Pageant Fans – 1, President Duterte – 0
